Our second anniversary in Bulgaria

Two years ago this very day after a long trek by road with all our belongings, including our gorgeous dogs, we arrived in Bulgaria from Greece to begin our new life.  Who would have thought that this poor dilapidated little property in need of renovation would turn out to be our dream home!  This is the picture on the website that prompted us to head to Bulgaria for a closer look.

Our dream home – eventually!

No after pictures yet I’m afraid, that’s a whole new blogging category ;-)

Tonight we celebrate with a glass of red wine, Bulgarian sausages and a briam consisting totally of fresh vegetables from our wonderful garden.  Perfect!

  1. I somehow missed this post when it first came out. How exciting for you to have found such a home. The roof tiles look lovely. It’s so satisfying to bring a place back to life and put your stamp on it.

    • Thank you, it’s a really lovely home. It’s a lot of work and it will take a long time but you’re so right about us being able to put our own mark on it. Starting from scratch is hard work but it does have it’s advantages. The roof tiles will need replacing at some time but that’s the strangest thing, there have been no leaks whatsoever despite the house’s age. We’re happy to leave well alone until we get the extension done when we can then re-tile the whole house, we’ve sourced a place that sells the old style tiles so we’re really pleased about that.

  2. Congratulations on a journey that has changed your lives in so many ways I am sure! What a brave little adventurer you are Eleenie! Well done! May the garden be abundant, the land be fertile, the home warm and sturdy and may all who live here always be filled with contentment. HUGS xx Sharon

    • Such a lovely comment Sharon, thank you so much! Our lives have most certainly changed for the better and we will continue to treat life as one big adventure! Hugs xx

    • Thank you! I certainly will post the ‘after’ photos, it’s a slowish process, time and money dictate the speed of the renovation right now but we’re getting there and thoroughly enjoying the experience which is the most important thing! :-)

  3. Congratulations on your 2nd anniversary. That house looked to be a major project. Have you done any earlier posts about it? I’m very intriqued about Bulgaria, I would love to see some photos of where you are living.

    • Thank you. I’ve not really put many posts on about the area, although I did do one a while back on Svishtov which is our nearest town, if you search Svishtov it should come up. I really need to get it together and write more posts about this fabulous area, I’ll get some photos of the village on the blog soon, now the gardening is almost done (apart from digging of course!) I will have more time on my hands and can begin the story about our time in Greece too.

    • It was very lovely thank you! I promise to blog about Greece and eventually our renovation project here in Bulgaria, perhaps I’ll start it in the winter whilst our garden is snowed under! ;-)

  4. Happy anniversary! You really should post some after photos too! What made you choose Bulgaria, I could never get my head around nodding for “no” and shaking for “yes” – let alone the language, Italian is difficult enough. Enjoy your wine. Christina

    • Thank you! I promise we will, I just want to get everything right first, money dictates everything as usual! I know exactly what you mean about the nodding, I still can’t get it right ;-) We chose Bulgaria for lots of reasons, my husband had already fallen in love with it, work had dried up in Greece but mostly we wanted our own home after almost 5 years of renting in Greece and Bulgaria was affordable to us and we most definitely didn’t want to move back to the UK. When I visited here I fell in love with it too, so it was a great move all round :-)

    • No we had been once before. This was the house that we fell in love with after searching properties on the net via a couple of estate agents. We had arranged to look at around 30 other houses and this one won through! Lots of work but worth it.

    • Yes it was but we’re getting there, it’s mostly cosmetic work left now really although the top of the barn to the right of the photo will be a project at a later date. Hubby is a builder so we do have an advantage ;-)
